Dear Friend:
In conjunction
with the production of the Thoreau DVD “Life With Principle”
in the late spring, the Thoreau Society is offering public programs
in communities across the United States. Centered on the DVD,
discussion-based workshops will draw on the educational curriculum
which accompanies the film portion. They will involve local librarians
and teachers to facilitate conversations and provide context.
As you know,
once a year we convene in Concord for the Annual Gathering of
the Thoreau Society. But the rest of the year, our visibility,
membership development, and educational outreach – our impact
– depends on our network of geographically-dispersed members
leading activities with support from the staff in the Concord
office.
We are writing
to you to invite you to be one of the “first fifty”
members, a core group of Thoreauvians willing to a.) pilot informal
programs for 20-50 people in their home communities and b.) mentor
other members who will be organizing similar programs in their
own home towns.
The programs
will follow a general template which is simple and replicable
wherever our members live. We will provide you with a program
kit, which is being developed now, and look forward to working
with you over the coming months. It is important to the future
of the Thoreau Society to begin with people like you who can represent
the Society in this significant national initiative.
If you are
interested in being part of this project, please copy what is
below into an e-mail and send it to us at your earliest convenience,
and we will be in touch with you shortly. We would like to introduce
our first programs by June and have several dozen going on in
different parts of the country throughout the summer and fall.
We hope you
will join us in this new project to carry out our mission to “honor
Henry David Thoreau by stimulating interest in and fostering education
about his life, works, and philosophy and his place in his world
and ours…”
Cordially,
Jayne Gordon
